Burgundy's laurels rest on just 2 grapes: the thin
skinned, fickle pinot noir for its reds and the racy chardonnay for its
whites. As Jacques Lardiere of Louis Jadot once told us, the pinot noir
is like a ‘peacock’: it has all of the dimensions for a great
red wine in one grape; whereas bordeaux depends on 2, or more, grapes
to make a complete wine. And the chardonnay from Burgundy produces Vin’s
all-time favorite white wine: Meursault. Vin would walk on his knees for
a glass of
Meursault, and he has indeed done that! But there are so many different
styles of red and white Burgundies, and Vin’s goal is to lead you
through this maze.
Actually Burgundy is an ideal wine region: without too much traveling, you have great wines, history, culture and wonderful food–and we’ll experience them all! By the time we leave Lyons on July 12, you will be on your way to becoming a Burgundy expert.
